Freedom. Libertas — this is written on the Dubrovnik flag. Freedom is sung about in our songs and many of the greatest heroes of all civilizations and cultures have hunted for it.

The traditional non-freedoms in our world are far from being eliminated but the wealthiest and most developed countries take this kind of freedom for granted. Each person is born free.

However, today, many people are searching for a freedom of a different kind — for the possibility to not drown in mediocrity and to stand out above the competition at work and in their private lives. The path of knowledge enables one to broaden their horizons.

The Isle of Knowledge project will be a useful stop on that journey of the most developed technology which is available today in the process of learning and knowledge exchange. Free Internet access is available on the entire island, a database with a larger number of titles than all the Croatian libraries together, satellite video links which will enable direct participation in lectures from the world’s best universities. However, lectures will also be broadcast from the Isle of Knowledge -the entire world will be able to follow the lectures and specialized seminars from Koločep Island.

In today’s world of technology, the periphery and centre have somehow lost sense — in order to be in the centre, all you have to do is want to be there. Before us is the technological realization of that Freedom we see on the flag of the Dubrovnik Republic.
