Ruins from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, six pre- Romanesque churches, a fortress for protection from pirates and fortresses built by the pirates themselves… all of that can be found within 2.3 sq. km. Since the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, the Venetians and more recent conquerors, Koločep has represented a crossroads between civilizations that have come and gone. According to a widespread belief, the nearby island of Korčula was the birthplace of the great Marco Polo. Across the sea on the mainland, some researchers have placed the mythical, ancient city of Troy, and so — who knows, perhaps even the great Ulysses took a rest in one of the bays of the island of Koločep on his way to Mljet. Koločep is a small centre of history, an island which was frequently sailed around, visited and occasionally settled on. Its heritage has engraved cosmopolitism onto its cliffs and walls. These are solid foundations for the future openness of the Isle of Knowledge to those desiring new knowledge from all over the world — people from various cultures, religions and traditions. Koločep — the Isle of Knowledge can be an oasis of peace in a world of pointless divisions. Friendship and love are the foundations of knowledge — when you share an apple you may become a friend, when you share knowledge you can be sure of it. |
