Mateo goes fishing with his father every morning.

Europe has a country of a thousand lakes — Finland, but also a country of a thousand islands — Croatia! Let’s be quite precise here: There are 79 islands, 526 islets and around 650 prominent sea rocks.

The tremendous indentedness and amazing diversity of the whole Croatian coastline is yet another story. A look from one of these hundreds of islands will pause on a craggy karstic hinterland or steep mountain chains. Austere and tame at the same time. Indeed, you can rarely find such an incredible, breathtaking variety within a comparatively limited area like this. However, for some time now the economy of the islands has been stagnating, and their populations dwindling. Traditional way of living is slowly vanishing, whereas the only current alternative is mass tourism during the summer. In this way the conditions of life on an island cannot be really improved.

There are almost no long-term integrated projects for the islands that can guarantee success and true change for the better. The Isle of Knowledge is exactly such a project.

Far away is the coast

The ship Postira docks at and leaves Donje Celo several times a day.

For most Croatian islands the recovery of tourism has brought only two summer months of trivial commercialization. Reality remains rather bleak on the islands. It can be changed only through integrated projects like The Isle of Knowledge.
